Tolerance of Actinomycetes to Inhibitory Substances Isolated from Calangut beach, Goa

Effluent of various industries contain number of inhibitory substances which are continuously added in sea via river and results in water pollution. There is need to degrade the organic content to abate water pollution. In the present study, actinomycetes were isolated on glycerol aspargine agar from marine sample of Calangut beach, Goa. The isolates were tested for their potential to tolerate inhibitory substances such as Dettol, Phenol, crystal violet, Sodium azide, and Lysol. Total ten isolates of actinomycetes were obtained, from which all isolates were found sensitive to Dettol and Phenol, 90% isolates were tolerate Sodium azide, while 80% of isolates have ability to grow in presence of Crystal violet and 40% isolates showed resistance to Lysol. From the study performed, we conclude that, obtained actinomycetes isolate having potential of tolerance to these inhibitory substances and having adsorption, absorption or degradative abilities may be used for the treatment of polluted water containing Crystal violet, Sodium azide and Lysol, etc.
